In 1875 at the age of 11 Mariah's family moved from Missouri to the territory of Arizona by covered wagon. Mariah married James Hawkins in 1882. They had two children, Charles, 1883, and Minnie, 1886. In 1889 Mariah died of Pneumonia. Her husband, Constable James Hawkins, was shot and killed in the line of duty. After his death, their orphaned children were raised by their grandparents, Samuel Cotton and Nancy Jane Dickinson.
